Dearness Allowance and its significance
for employees
Dearness Allowance (DA) is the additional payment paid by the employers to the employee to adjust their cost-of-living at par with the current inflation. Provision of Dearness Allowance is made in such a way that it is to address the impact of inflation on the real income of employees.
What is Dearness Allowance (DA)?
The Dearness Allowance (DA) is a calculation on inflation and allowance paid to civil servant employees (alongside public sector enterprises’ employees as public sector unit employees are also government employees but not civil servants), some private sector employees and civil servant pensioners in India.
Factors Influencing DA
It is a cost of living adjustment which
is determined by inflation for the convenience of employees. It is a taxable
allowance which comes with the gross salary. All India Consumer Price Index
Number (AICPIN) for Industrial
Workers is the primary factor needed for the calculation of DA (Dearness
Allowance). Consumer Price Index (CPI) for Industrial Workers is released by Labour Bureau of India every
month on the basis of retail prices collected from 317 markets spread over 88
industrially important centres in the country.
What is All India Consumer Price Index Number (AICPIN) for April 2024?
The
All-India CPI-IW for April, 2024 increased by 0.5 point and stood at 139.4 (one
hundred thirty nine point four). Year-on-year inflation for the
month of April, 2024 stood at 3.87% as compared to 5.09% in April, 2023.

Expected DA from July 2024
To Calculate
expected DA from July 2024, we need CPI-IW Numbers of last six month from January
2024 to June 2024. CPI-IW Numbers for January 2024 to April 2024 has been released
by Labour Bureau of India.
Calculating Expected DA
As CPI-IW
Numbers for January 2024 to April 2024 has been released by Labour Bureau of
India. We need AICPIN data for May 2024 and June 2024 to get exact data of DA
and DR from July 2024. Till the time consumer price index number for the May
2024 and June 2024 is released, we will calculate the expected DA from July
2024 by considering expected all India consumer price index number for the
month of May and June 2024.
Case-1: There is no change in CPI-IW Numbers for May and June 2024. Then Expected DA from July 2024 will be as below calculation-
